a veggie lover after all

I have really been getting into cooking the last couple of months. For anyone that really knows me, this statement should make absolutely no sense!! I have always been known as the girl who happily lived off of cereal and bologna sandwiches in college :) in fact, I don't really think I ever cooked a full meal (well, successfully cooked) until recently. I must really be taking this whole domestic mommy thing very seriously.

Actually, I think I just figured out that I should cook things that I want to eat. When Daniel and I first got married, I tried my hardest to make things that he liked to eat. His favorite foods run along the lines of macaroni and cheese, fried ANYTHING, lots of chicken and beef, rice, beans, and zero vegetables or fruits. That really doesn't fly with me because a) I really don't care for meats in my meals, and b) I really am practically a vegetarian just due to all of the veggies I eat. So after attempting to make a few meals that involved heavily fried meaty cheesy things, I gave up. It's really hard to motivate yourself to cook foods that you don't even like! Not to mention I gained five pounds trying to eat it all, lol.

Then I figured out that Daniel will eat veggies (even though he claims to hate them) if I just cooked them in an appetizing way. He sometimes gripes about the meals when I first mention them but as soon as he eats them he changes his mind :) looks like I have a veggie lover after all!! He now loves salads with my oil & vinegar dressing, zucchini pie, spinach/tomato/basil pizza, egg & tomato sandwiches, 1905 salad, sweet potatoes, and stir fried veggies! Still can't convince him to try my eggplant parmesan though, guess we'll have to work on that ;)

And I do treat him every once in awhile and make Velveeta mac & cheese and steak for him. :)

a name for the littlest Silva

We finally decided on a name for bambino #2, a whopping 4 months earlier than we did with Logan! Well, Logan wasn't exactly nameless for those 4 months - he was just known as Ethan, which we obviously decided didn't fit him as well :) sometimes you just know, and we knew that Logan was a Logan!

S#2 will now be known as...

Blake Daniel

Now I can start making crafty baby stuff with his name and initials! I really want to buy a sewing machine. Maybe I'll hint around at one to Daniel for my birthday ;)

20 months

I think I am in love with this stage that Logan is in! Minus the temper tantrums of course, lol. The terrible twos definitely settled in just shortly after he turned 18 months...ay yi yi. But this stage really starts to show off their personalities - I think by age 2 they really start to let you know what their preferences and dislikes are!

*Loving all things cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trains. Says Choo-Choo for trains all the time now! so cute. When he sees a car, truck, or motorcycle, he pretends to rev up. Kills me with cuteness, this one.
*His favorite foods are rice, beans, chips, chocolate, apples, and really most other fruits & veggies. He surprised me and ate a bunch of raw zucchini slices the other day while I was preparing the Zucchini Pie. But the rice & beans...that's his Puerto Rican/Colombian side since I'm really not a fan! At least that means he likes to eat at one of my favorite places, Chipotle!
*He laughs at everything. This kid is seriously a ham with a mischievous side to him - he'll raise one eyebrow and smile while he's getting ready to do something he knows he's not supposed to.

*So athletic! Climbs everything. He learned how to balance on the beam at My Gym last week, and today while at the park he was practicing all by himself on the wooden beams around the park.
*Strangely enough, he's an organizer. Yep, definitely didn't get that from me, haha! I find random little piles of toys, usually his cars, organized in lines or groups around the house. I sure hope that's not a sign of OCD, lol...

Puerto Rican vacation

Before I totally forget due to my ever increasing pregnancy brain, I wanted to write a not-so-short summary of our trip to Puerto Rico!

It was such a whirlwind trip from the very beginning. We had scheduled to take a vacation at the end of June to the West coast of Florida, possibly Sarasota area. The day we had planned to book the hotel, we got a phone call from Daniel's dad. Apapa, Daniel's grandfather, hasn't been doing well for awhile and it didn't look like he was going to be doing well enough to come back to FL to visit any time soon. So - quick change, we're going to PR!

We scheduled 9 days in PR, starting out with an evening flight on Saturday, June 25, into the airport in San Juan. Bad idea! We totally thought that since the flight was taking off right around Logan's bedtime that he would just conk out shortly into the 3 hour flight. Evidently we totally forgot to add in that he would be so keyed up from all the activity and "newness" of the airport that he would stay up an extra hour and a half (of course wreaking havoc on our seatmate, what else is new, haha). But we finally made it! It was around 10:30pm and Logan was passed out, which left us to battle two large carry ons, a stroller, a sleeping baby, a pack'n'play, and one checked bag. Whew!! We were exhausted by the time we made it out of the SJ airport and to the pick up lane to find the rental car shuttle.

Oh my. The rental car shuttle was quite the escapade. Daniel was not kidding when he said that drivers in PR are NUTS! We clung on for dear life and eventually made it. When we got there, we joked around about this pretty blue Mustang in the parking lot - "yep, that's gotta be ours!" "wouldn't it be funny to drive around in that thing?!" ha ha ha the joke ended up being on us...the rent a car place said that they were out of clean midsize sedans (what we requested) and handed over the keys to the shiny blue Mustang. Ummm...hmm. This will be a challenge. By now, Logan was wide awake.

Although we didn't get lost, it was a crazy drive to Titi Mayra and Tio Hector's house in Guaynabo. Thankfully Logan went back to sleep in the car and didn't wake up when we transferred him to his pack'n'play. I hadn't seen Hector in awhile and had never met Mayra, so we stayed up and talked with them for a little bit before finally crashing around 1am.

The rest of our trip was filled with family dinners with our PR cousins (Hector Javi, Olgita, Luccia, Camilo, Adriana), two visits to Apapa's house in Hato Rey, a couple of rainy attempts to sightsee Viejo San Juan, eating tons of fried foods, a few fun beach & pool days in the Orejuela's beachfront condo in Palmas, a (failed, but hilarious) day trip to Dos Bocas, tour of the lighthouse in Fajardo, and a little side visit to the El Yunque Rainforest.

Highlights from our trip:
- seeing the relatives of course! Logan's first time to meet all of them except Apapa (he met Apapa when he was 3 months old in Boston).
- eating really good food! Mayra is an amazing cook, Hector a master at the grill, yummy fried calamari at Palmas, amazing lunch at this little restaurant with Tio Rafa and Petra, and lots of authentic Puerto Rican cooking from roadside stands.
- our failed trip to Dos Bocas was probably the most memorable. The hour long traffic jam that involved 8 "lanes" of traffic filtering down to 3 toll booths, the restaurant being in the middle of nowhere and then being closed, attempting to find the little dive place recommended by Alberto but totally failing and basically making a three hour trip to eat at McDonald's.
- having a really awesome tour guide (aka Daniel) give me the true Puerto Rican experience! It is so nice to go with someone who somewhat knows the area (he has been every summer until he was in college) and who speaks fluent Spanish. I never would have made it there alone!

We hope to go again soon, next time baby free, so we can fully hike the rainforest (Logan was ultra cranky that day), do the catamaran tours off of Fajardo, and take a short flight over to Vieques for some snorkeling!

Kiddo #2

I thought baby naming was hard the first time around. Hah! It's way harder this time, mostly because we're having to name the same sex. I feel like we've already been through all of the baby names and picked our favorite! Although really, it wasn't that Logan's name was necessarily the be-all end-all of boy names, it just happened to be the one that "fit" at the time. I think we may have come across that name for S#2 already, but I'm a little hesitant to commit already...lol. We didn't name the L-man til the month before he was born, so pretty much anything would feel early compared to that. Whoops. Plus, should we be bothered by the initials B.S.?? Do kids tease about stuff like that? Daniel is convinced it just makes him sound "hard," but really, you'd just have to understand my husband's obsession with giving our boys "hard" names (what does that even mean, really?!). If he had it his way, this one would be named Axel Maximus. No joke.

prego round #2

Yes, you got it...two posts in one day. This will probably never happen again.

Kind of ironic that when I first posted in this blog it was about finding out about Logan, and now I'm pregnant again with S#2 (who we just found out is another BOY, woohoo!!). How the two pregnancies compare so far:

- still can't eat deviled eggs. Darn. Funny how one of your favorite foods becomes instantly unappetizing the minute you get pregnant.
- still had the usual blah-ish gaggy gross nauseous feeling throughout the first tri of this pregnancy too. Still the usual stomach of steel as far as actual throwing up though.
- with the L, I craved a lot of sweet stuff - fruit, smoothies, cakes. This time I really want Mexican. All the time!! Chipotle and Publix deli medium salsa & chips are my new best friends. If only I could have a margarita to go with it...haha.
- showing a lot earlier this time, but they say that's the norm for anything after the first kiddo.
- oh, and best of all: no crazy cramping pains!! That was literal torture with Logan for the first trimester. I was doubled over in pain almost every day, with the doctor telling me that although that wasn't very common, could happen when the muscles are stretching. I guess Logan was busy wreaking havoc even in the womb! :)
- I have had to cheat and have a little caffeine here and there during this pregnancy. If not, I would never survive a day with an active toddler.

The week before we found out we were pregnant with S#2, we went with some friends to Islands of Adventure. While in line for the Jurassic Park ride, our friend's dad joked around about the possibility of me being pregnant and not being able to go on the roller coasters. We all laughed, since really we had been "not trying" for the past four months and still nothing so I wasn't worried about it. We probably went on about three roller coasters that day, and each time I got off I felt a little "off." I had a pounding headache and felt a little sick - which is REALLY odd for me, given my stomach of steel. I opted not to ride the last coaster, the Hulk, since I was feeling kinda crappy.

The next week I ordered some cheap pregnancy tests in bulk from Amazon since after 4 months of unsuccessfully "not trying" Daniel was getting tired of spending the $10+ bucks on each drug store pregnancy test. They came in on a Thursday afternoon. I checked them out in their package and decided to try one out, just to see how they work (ha ha) even though I thought it was too early to test. When I saw the two little blue lines, I don't think I've ever been so surprised! Okay, well, maybe about as surprised as when I took one for Logan, but that's a whole 'nother story :) I guess I know now why they recommend that pregnant women don't ride roller coasters!

Two years later...

Holy cannoli! I went to make a new blog (because Wordpress is really starting to get on my nerves) and who knew, apparently I already have a blogspot blog! Well, here we are over two years later...

My old posts are over at learningwithlogan, which pretty much sums up my early mama-hood experiences (starting when Logan was about two months old or so, I think). Wordpress has this really irritating way of deleting things once you've already typed them, and making it so I couldn't scroll back up and add things to my post once I reached the end. Super grr. So, let's give blogspot/blogger/whatever this thing is called a try since everyone else is using it (yes, I fell onto the bandwagon). Plus it's Google run, and really, who doesn't love Google?! I certainly do.

More or less, I really should chronicle a bit more of Logan's life (and ours too, I suppose) since I don't scrapbook or anything. Or make Logan a baby book. Bad mom. All of his milestones are neatly kept in the "Notes" section of my iPhone. I'm sure he'll really appreciate that one when he gets older (ha ha).

So here we go...
